Art for the Heart Counseling offers Individual and Specialized Group Topic Areas (see below). These services also include supporting those interracial families/persons who feel their concerns have been underserved. My sensitivity to multiculturalism is rooted in an appreciation of my African American and Japanese heritage, along with the many various groups with whom I have been privileged to know. My own interracial marriage, diverse family members and multicultural friendships provide me with personal insights that enrich and inform my life and work.

Individual Counseling Topic Areas:

Concerns of Children and Teens* (children 10 yrs+/teens)
“Heart-to-Heart”
Talking about problems can be difficult for children/teens. Through art expression and talk therapy, children/teens will explore their thoughts and feelings with regard to peer difficulties, dating and relationship issues, low self-esteem, school, or family relations. Children and teens will increase self-understanding, personal expression, and practice coping skills. ($120/hour, includes parent/guardian collaboration)

Grief and Loss, including pet loss*(children 10 years+, teens, adults)
“Mending the Heart”
For those who have lost a loved one through death, whether anticipated or unexpected. Utilizing an Art Therapy and talk therapy approach, clients will gain in understanding of grief/loss, process difficult emotions, and gain increased coping skills. ($120/hour, includes parent/guardian collaboration)

Addressing Depression and Anxiety (teens, adults)
“The Heart of the Matter”
Through use of art therapy and talk therapy, clients will gain insight into their depression and/or anxiety, learn effective coping skills and strategies, including tools to self regulate and self soothe ($120/hr).

Biracial/Multiracial Identity Exploration (adults)
“The Heart of Self-Acceptance”
Being biracial/multiracial in and of itself does not mean there are “issues.” Generally, the problem is not the individual but often society’s attitude and messaging which can pose challenges. Through art expression and talk therapy, adults will have the opportunity to explore their personal journey and strengthen their sense of self, including self-acceptance. ($120/hour)

Personal Growth Counseling for Graduate Students in Mental Health Programs (adults)
“Following Your Heart”
Are you a graduate student in a mental health program seeking to explore your dreams and hopes for the future? Is the thought of transitioning into a professional role post grad school exciting but stressful? Focus will be on graduate student’s personal journey through art expression and talk therapy. Limited slots. ($60 hour). *Not available to USC Dworak-Peck School of Social Work students. Adjunct Lecturer disclosure.

Adult Women Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse* (group forming)
“Reclaiming Myself with Heart”
In a small safe group, women will understand the effects of childhood sexual abuse, manage their feelings and anxiety, and improve their emotional health. Art therapy, along with a cognitive behavioral approach is used to help clients to feel safe and supported. Please contact Dr. Marlene Ochetti at 626 365-1242 or click “appointment” for an in- person consultation. Saturdays, 3:00 pm-5:00 pm ($350. 10 week group, 90minutes per session). Start date pending.

Specialized Group for Biracial/Multiracial Teen Girls, 14 yrs-17 yrs* (group forming)
“Celebrating Me with Heart”
“Who am I?” is a defining question of adolescence. For those who are biracial/multiracial, there may be more complexity. Through art expression and talk therapy, teen girls will explore their heritage and ways in they sometimes feel they “fit” in and “don’t fit in.” Dating, peers, societal messaging, self-image, will be explored. Teen girls will learn coping strategies and celebrate all that they are! $175 , 4 week group, 1 hour per session, Thursdays, 3:30 pm-4:30 pm) Start date pending. Includes parent/guardian collaboration.
